A red Jeep Rubicon drives over a rocky reddish terrain, a canyon wall in the background. A muscular
man wearing a green Jeep t-shirt and jeans steps down from the driver's seat. His left arm has been amputated
above the elbow. He sits on a rock among the sagebrush. Noah Galloway, P.E.T. U.S. Army , 101st Airborne.
(SPEECH)
My name is Noah Galloway. I'm an injured veteran that lost my arm and leg in Iraq. I've had some success where I ended up on the cover of Men's Health, was on Dancing with the Stars, did a show on Fox, and now I'm out here with the Jeep brand in Moab and their DriveAbility
program, and that's all
about accessibility.
(DESCRIPTION)
He drives the Jeep slowly up a slope of huge boulders. Men stand nearby watching.
(SPEECH)
It was my second deployment to Iraq and
I was with the 101st, and we were in Southwest Baghdad in
an area known as "The Triangle of Death,"
and I was driving
a Humvee and hit a trip-wire. I woke up six days later on Christmas Day. It was all news to me. I'd lost my left arm above the elbow, my left leg above the knee. My right leg was severely
injured.
My jaw was shattered.
My mouth was wired
shut.
(DESCRIPTION)
The Jeep struggles and starts and then climbs over the rocks, its massive tires gripping the
surface.
(SPEECH)
You know, when people
ask me about the obstacles that I overcame
when I was first injured, there are still
obstacles that I face,
you know. And I always talk about my kids. When I come across something that
I'm like, "Well, I
don't know if I can do that," it's still worth the try because I want to show my kids that you should never stop;
you should always move
forward.
(DESCRIPTION)
Looking out of the passenger seat from inside as the Jeep climbs. A man in a white shirt and
baseball cap directs the Jeep, waving his arms. As the Jeep climbs up another rocky face, a man in a dark shirt
directs by waving his arms. A group of men stand near the Jeep. Sign on driver side window, Equipped with left
foot pedal extension.
(SPEECH)
We're out here on
these trails, and this
is such a complicated
route. The obstacles. I mean, you have spotters, you have people
that are helping you
because you cannot see
everything outside of
the vehicle. So you
don't do it alone.
Having a team makes
all the difference, and DriveAbility and that
program
is the exact same
thing. It's where you're taking, you come
together
as a team to make something happen. -
How's it looking, Noah? Good.
(DESCRIPTION)
Noah leans into the driver's seat. The foot pedal has been fitted with an extension. Noah talks as
he drives down a bumpy desert road. The Jeep sits under a white tent. Noah walks around it and enters the driver's
seat. The pedal extension, a black rectangle on top of the gas pedal.
(SPEECH)
One of the things
that the DriveAbility
program offers is financial assistance up to
a thousand dollars. So
if you have someone
that needs modifications to a vehicle, not
only are all vehicles
set up so that
it's easily adaptable, you
know, once it's done
you can be reimbursed
up to a thousand
dollars. I think that
is just a great
part of the program.
(DESCRIPTION)
The Jeep's tires lurch over rocks. Noah carefully turns the vehicle along cliffs.
(SPEECH)
What I love
about being out here is there's all
these other,
you know, vehicles that are taking these
these hard, challenging courses, and I'm no
different than anyone else. You know, I'm
in my vehicle missing
an arm and a leg, but I'm going
up the same trails.
